The Neo-Classical Akron Post Office and Federal Building was abandoned as a Post Office building in 1983 and was converted for offices and light manufacturing by a local sign company. The building had suffered minor neglect, carbon covered the masonry, windows were deteriorating and the roof and skylights were beginning to fail. New window sashes were installed on the west, south and east elevations, while the north façade windows were refurbished. The limestone was cleaned using water soaking, no chemicals were employed for the cleaning and the mortar was repointed. The underpinning of the monumental stairs had failed, and each step was removed and numbered to be cleaned and rebuilt. The large lanterns at the terrace were also refurbished. The interior was rehabbed to house offices for SUMMA Health Care Systems. The front lobby was reinstated to its original glory, marble polished and storefronts refinished.
