Jonathan holds both Bachelor and Master of Architecture degrees from Kent State University. Upon graduation he worked with the preeminent design firm of Don M. Hisaka, Architects. Jonathan then joined Planning Resources, Inc., becoming the Principal heading their Architectural Department. While at Planning Resources he participated in many planning and urban design projects, as well as architectural facilities design. Finally, in 1990, Sandvick Architects, Inc. was formed with the mission of assisting the revitalization of downtowns and city neighborhoods, encouraging reinvestment in our nation’s existing building stock, finding new uses for underutilized buildings, and promoting planning with preservation as a central initiative to restore community identity and viability.
Sandvick Architects, Inc. successfully practices sustainable design by applying the principles of historic preservation in the architectural, planning and advocacy services provided by the firm. Jonathan is an expert in the architectural analysis of historic buildings, programming and feasibility studies, and the successful use of historic rehabilitation tax credits and conservation easements to provide redevelopment financing for a wide variety of projects, including hotels, offices, community facilities and housing. Jonathan has been the Architect for over 40 buildings historically rehabilitated and adaptively used in Cleveland alone, and has achieved housing for nearly 5000 residents (nearing 3000 housing units) in historic preservation adaptive use projects. The firm’s unique, specialized skills in historic preservation, code analysis, adaptive use and urban design have been used by developers throughout Ohio and in Connecticut, New York,
Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Jonathan and his firm have been honored with over 40 awards for excellence.
Jonathan is Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Cleveland Historic Warehouse District, a non-profit development corporation focusing on the development of a historic portion of downtown Cleveland into a neighborhood with housing and other diverse uses. He is Vice Chairman for Downtown Cleveland Alliance, an organization that drives strategic planning and revitalization for downtown Cleveland. Jonathan is also Vice Chair for Heritage Ohio, the statewide organization dedicated to management, protection and revitalization of Ohio heritage resources, working in concert with the Ohio Historic Preservation Office and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Jonathan serves on several design review committees and is a long-time trustee of the Cleveland Restoration Society.
Jonathan believes that our existing buildings are one of our great storehouses of natural resources imbued with wonderful artistry and history that are important to save as a matter of ecological, social and cultural responsibility. Jonathan is also focused on revitalization of the city, particularly with the emphasis on adaptive use and rehabilitation of worthy, underutilized buildings and in bringing housing back to the city.
